DESCENDENTSが3度目のジャパン・ツアーを開催する。
パンデミックになる前の2019年に2度目の来日をしており、パンデミック明けとなってからは初の来日となる。全国4都市5公演のジャパン・ツアーで対バンにはHUSKING BEE / HEY-SMITH / KUZIRA / COUNTRY YARD / Ken Yokoyamaが並ぶ。来日を記念して、SATANIC ENT.では、メールインタビューにて”十問十答”を敢行した。

---前回の来日はパンデミックの前だったと思います。パンデミックの期間は、バンドとして、個人としてどのように過ごされていましたか？
Last time you came to Japan was pre-covid. How did you spend your time during the pandemic both as a band and as an individual?

I spent most of Covid working on music and doing things with my family. Pretty sure that’s what all the guys did.
コロナ禍は音楽に専念し、ほとんど家族と過ごしていたんだ。きっとメンバー全員同じように過ごしていたはず。

 

---現在はツアー中だと思いますが、今後新作なども考えてますか？
You are currently on tour, but are you planning on any new releases?

Yes!!!!  We have about 20 songs recorded and are working on a bunch more.
はい！！！！20曲くらいレコーディング済みで、それ以外にも多くの楽曲を制作中だよ。 
 

 

---今回は各公演に日本のバンドがフロントアクトとして出演しますが、過去に日本のバンドと共演した思い出や、今回のフロントアクトについて注目している点などありますか？
There will be different Japanese bands opening for the respective shows in Japan. Do you have any memories from past performances with Japanese bands? Or what are you looking forward to in the bands that will be opening at this Japan tour?
 
I must admit that I’ve not seen any of the bands that will be opening, but we look forward to seeing each of them.
今回フロントアクトで参加するバンドは、どれもまだ観たことがないが、メンバー全員とても楽しみにしてるよ。

---初来日から日本もだいぶ変わったと思いますが、当時ショックだったことや、日本についてカルチャーショックだったことを教えてください。
I’m sure a lot has changed about Japan since you first visited - are there any shocking moments or culturally surprising events you have experienced in Japan?

In 1993, I remember being pleasantly surprised that the kids would just leave their backpacks outside the Mall, and nobody would steal them. That would not work in the U.S.
1993年に子供たちがリュックをショッピングモールの外に置いて何処かに行ってしまったけど、全く盗まれていないのを見て、いい意味で衝撃を受けたよ。アメリカでは絶対に起こり得ないことだね。

 

---途中、あなたが離脱した期間はあったとはいえ、ほぼ50年活動されています。2023年現在の音楽シーンはあなたにとってどのように見えていますか？好きなニューアーティストなんています？
The band has been around for approximately 50 years, even considering the periods of your absence. What’s your perspective on the current music scene? Are there any new artists you like or listen to?

I’m really into Hospital Socks, Plasma Canvas, & Audio Karate.
最近はHospital Socks、Plasma Canvas、そしてAudio Karateにどハマりしてるよ。

 

---DESCENDENTSがスタートした当時と、現代で１番違うことはなんだと思いますか？変わらないこともあれば是非それも聞きたいです。
Compared to when DESCENDENTS started, what do you think has changed the most in the music scene? Or do you believe not much has changed?

Seems to me there are a million music scenes now – Very exciting times for music. There were no Cell Phones or Internet when we started, so quite a lot has changed. In many respects, it is easier to be a band now, to net work, to find venues, to reach out to an audience. But in other ways, it’s much more difficult, because there’s such a tremendous amount of noise out in the world, in social media, etc..
僕からすると、今では何百万もの音楽シーンが存在しているように見えるよ。音楽的にとてもエキサイティングな時代だと思う。僕たちがバンドを結成した当初は携帯もインターネットもなかったから、かなり多くのことが変化したよ。今はネットワークを築いたり、会場を見つけたり、観客と繋がることが簡単になって、あらゆる観点でバンドがやりやすくなった。でも、その反面、世の中は非常に多くのノイズで騒がしく、ソーシャルメディアなどで、とても厳しい側面もある。

---若いバンドは先人にインスピレーションを受けて自分達の音楽への活力としていると思いますが、DESCENDENTSは何にインスピレーションを受けているんでしょう？50年もその情熱を燃やすことのできる燃料はなんですか？
Young bands often draw inspiration from their predecessors to fuel their own music. What were the musical influences for DESCENDENTS? What has been keeping your passion alive for 50 years?

Our man early influences were The Last, Black Flag, the Alley Cats, X. Music often travels in many directions at the same time. Influences present themselves in different forms, at different times in one’s life. It’s sort of like a river, constantly moving
僕たちの初期の影響は主にThe Last、Black Flag、The Alley Cats、そしてXだったよ。音楽というものは一斉にさまざまな方向に進むもの。人生のあらゆる場面、異なった形で影響が表れてくる。それは絶えず流れ続ける川みたいに。

 

---単刀直入に「DESCENDENTSの掲げるゴール」ってなんですか？
Straight to the point - what is DESCENDENTS’ ultimate goal?

Our goal today is probably the same goal as it was the day we started. Simply to have fun playing interesting music.
結成した頃から目標は変わっていないと思う。シンプルに楽しんで、音楽をやり続けること。

 

---世界中をツアーされていると思いますが、日本のオーディエンスについて、どう感じますか？他の国と違う特徴を感じることもありますか？
You’ve toured all over the world. How do you feel about the Japanese audience specifically? Do you notice any distinct characteristics that set them apart from audiences in other countries?

The Japanese audiences have treated us so well. Great energy and kindness. Wonderful memories
日本のオーディエンスは本当に良くしてくれる。素晴らしいエネルギーに溢れていて、親切にしてくれる。素晴らしい思い出ばかりだよ。

 

---最後にライブを楽しみにしているファンに一言。
Finally, please give a message to the Japanese fans looking forward for the upcoming Japan shows.
 
We’re greatly looking forward to seeing you, and playing our songs for you. We will have a wonderful time together
皆んなに会えること、僕たちの音楽を演奏すること、本当に楽しみにしてる。素晴らしい時間を一緒に過ごそう。
